Studying Flint through Social Studies, Science, and Service-Learning

Create your own video slideshow at animoto.com.

We have been studying the city of Flint and the Flint area this semester.  Through tours at U-M Flint, Genesee Early College,
Powers High School, and Kettering University we have learned about the unique educational opportunities Flint offers.  With the
Flint River Coalition we have been learning about the impact of industry, agriculture, and recreation and are participating in
river testing.  As in the past, we have been partnering with the Flint North End Soup Kitchen.  The students are having a
very positive experience learning a lot about Flint.

Chemistry: Understanding the Periodic Table and Trends in Reactivity

Monarch Butterfly Studies

Inspecting recently hatched larvaMonarch larva growth rate

Variable: 24 hour light

Students experiment with monarch larva to determine questions such as: how light and temperature affects the growth rate of the larva, milkweed species preferences, and how handling of the larva effects growth rate.

Water Quality/Chemistry Unit

Farmer's Creek "River Walk"

Stepping in for the "River Walk"Observing and enjoying

 Success

In order to determine water quality in our environment, students have done pond dipping and river walking.  Students observe and analyze the effects of erosion, macroinvertebrate populations, native and non-native species, human impact and other indicators including dissolved oxygen levels, temperature, and pH to determine water quality.

Ice Harvest

We enjoyed the opportunity to get out on the pond ice in February.  Here is part of our class sawing and harvesting ice.  In Science and Math we are working to understand volume.  We looked at the difference between water displacement and using length measurements to find volume.

As we worked we remembered that Jim Davis from the Davis Brothers Historical Farm tells of how ice was harvested during the winter months in Lapeer and kept frozen until the late Summer during the early 1900s.

You will see that Peter, our ecology instructor, also helped us to create an impressive ice tower.

The ice saw is suprisingly easier to use than it appears.

With several inches of ice our class is able to participate.

The saw is used with a straight up and down motion.

Ice "tongs" are used to pull the ice block out of the water.

We were able to calculate the volume using measurement and water displacement techniques.          Our tower was even taller than this when we finished.
